new bands

Mark dared me to put up a lengthy post about Scottish indie rock that I've been listening to lately. In lieu of that, for the time being, I'll put up this blurb about a band I've been listening to lately. They sound a little Scottish maybe. And they're playing at the Capitol Hill Block Party.

But this song reminds me of Jesus & Mary Chain's 'Just Like Honey' + some washed-out guitar.

making uncool things cooler

The new Seattle transit card has appeared. I went out and got one today because they're free until next month. You're able to use them on buses, ferries, trains, etc. Now I don't need to worry about bringing cash with me if I'm taking the bus.

The card is called Orca - One Regional Card for All. There's a little picture of an orca on it. The card looks pretty nice:

I think I like it more than the Japanese equivalent:

ordering at starbucks

Ever notice, especially at Starbucks, when people place their order, most people use a 4-syllable phrase?

You don't really notice it unless you're there. Next time you're in Starbucks, listen to the people in front of you. 9 out of 10 times, people order:
"canigetta latte?" "canigetta coffee?"

It's weird.

andrew and the dehumidifier incident

My house has no ventilation.

Shortly after I moved in, my dresser drawers became harder & harder to open. Water accumulated and dripped from one window. I got a Japanese dehumidifier which actually works [below]. Best I can figure, the little balls in the top of the box pull moisture through the top membrane somehow.

A few weeks ago, while changing my bed's sheets, I noticed some mold around the bed. The mattress had been flush against the wall.

Daiso was out of the dehumidifier boxes so I bought an expensive one. It's pulling gallons of water per day out of my house. It's shrinking the dresser drawers and now I can actually use it again. No real point to the story, I'm just amazed at how much water can be pulled from the air.

echobase

It's all well and good to name your wifi network something sassy until your dad comes over and tries to set up his iphone. Then he'll ask 'echobase'? what's that?

"um...well it's the rebel base on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back"

...

maybe I'll just rename it to "Andrew's House"

milk man!

Milk men, of course, have fallen out of style. The daily or semi-daily deliver of milk isn't as necessary these days. In Seattle, I think we could use a coffee man. Delivering fresh coffee beans every 3 days. I'd pay for that.

snowy

I made it up to Peter's house around 5; I got home at 7-something. I was going to have some dinner but half-way through the trip, it looked like the snow was going to stick. So I came back pretty quickly. On I5, People were driving 30 mph (for no good reason) in wet, non-sticking snow. Then they were driving 30 mph (for good reason) on the way back.

Here's a picture of the traffic camera, after 7.
